British Literature: Not Your Parent's British Literature
A high school literature and composition class for the mature high school student (grades 8 - 12; parents are encouraged to read books with their children). Awards 1 English Literature / Composition Credit (Honors Option Available)
Students begin each selection by researching both the author and historical context of the novel and then are given several writing topics from which they may select one. During the reading of the novel, students should be developing support for their writing.
Class discussions will focus on the book assignment for that week, and/or will allow practice in English Composition. Students will be expected to follow the "Writing Process" by writing a draft, a revision, and a final version (each with feedback from the teacher). Emphasis is placed on the literary analysis displayed both through class discussion and in the writing assignments, and formal composition is developed primarily through teacher feedback in the writing process. Students to please purchase the same copy of the book because it makes class discussions much easier to refer them to specific page numbers.
Novels will be selected from the following titles. Those not covered in class will be used as honors selections. Note: 1984 by George Orwell is a SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT which should be completed before the first class.
