Course Repeat and Grade Enhancement Policy (8/8/2020)
This policy applies to courses that receive a standard letter grade including elective courses and advanced courses taken for high school credit.
Student Course Grade Enhancement Petition Process Student must petition the principal of Preparatory Academy, Inc. for consideration to repeat a course for grade enhancement. The student must write a letter, addressed to the principal, explaining why he/she believes it is academically warranted to repeat the course. The letter must include the name of the original course, the course’s instructor, and the start date of the course. The student must also include the grade awarded and an explanation of what the student expects to change in order to earn a higher grade. Additionally, the student should acknowledge that if course repetition is granted that both course attempts will be listed on his/her transcript, that credit toward graduation requirements will only be awarded for only one course, and that if the grade is not enhanced, both grades will be used to calculate the GPA.
The letter should be signed by the student, and at least one of his/her parents or guardians.
The letter must be delivered to the principal at least 2 weeks prior to course registration. Once the principal has reviewed the petition, the student and his/her parents will be informed of the principal’s decisions regarding course repetition and grade enhancement.
Course Repeat and Grade Enhancement Policy (8/8/2020)
This policy applies to courses that receive a standard letter grade including elective courses and advanced courses taken for high school credit.
- Grade enhancement for required courses shall be limited to replacing a grade of “D” or “F” with a grade of “C” or higher earned subsequently in the same or comparable course.
- Grade enhancement for elective courses shall be limited to replacing a grade of “D” or “F” with a grade of “C” or higher earned subsequently in another course.
- A student in the middle grades who takes any high school course for high school credit and earns a grade of “C,” “D,” or “F” will be allowed to enhance the original grade with “C” or higher earned subsequently in the same or comparable course.
- Any student who was removed from the original class, suspended, or expelled from the school for academic integrity and honesty violations will not qualify for course repeat and/or grade forgiveness.
- Only the enhanced grade shall be used in the calculation of the student’s grade point average.
- Any course grade not enhanced shall be included in the calculation of the cumulative grade point average required for graduation.
- All courses attempted will appear on the student transcript and in the student portfolio regardless of grade enhancement and will reflect the grades for both the original course attempt and the repeated course, even when the original grade was enhanced.
- Any course used for grade enhancement must be offered through Preparatory Academy, Inc. Transfer credit from another school or home education program may not be used for grade enhancement.
- Preparatory Academy, Inc. cannot guarantee that a duplicate or comparable course will be repeated in subsequent academic periods. Therefore, we encourage all students to perform to their maximum academic ability and to contact instructors for assistance as soon as the student recognizes that he/she is struggling academically.
