SCHOOL POLICIES

High School Credits Taken Before High School (8/8/2020)

Policy: Unless stated otherwise in the course description, high school courses may be taken for high school credit by students in grades 8 without approval; students in lower grades may enroll in high school courses only with written approval.

Offering high school courses to lower grade students is one way of providing accelerated and challenging coursework to students. Because the student earns high school credit, the student may be able to complete graduation requirements early or allow him/ her to take more electives in high school.
Any high school credit and grade a student earns in lower grades is entered into his/her transcript; the parent may not request that the course credit and grade be omitted. Additionally, the grade will be entered into the student’s grade point average.

Be aware. Students who are not emotionally ready for the rigors of a high school class may develop negative attitudes toward both the content of the course and their abilities in the subject area. Some of the things to consider before enrolling your lower grade student in a high school class are:
  • Current grades in the subject area
  • Student’s interest in the subject area
  • Student’s maturity level
  • Student’s extracurricular activities
If you choose to withdraw your student from a high school course, you may lose associated registration fees, tuition fees, or materials fees. If your student does poorly in the high school class, he/she may be able to repeat the course with grade forgiveness. Refer to our high school grade forgiveness policy for more details. If you have any questions or concerns about enrolling your lower grade student in a high school course, please consider discussing them with the course instructor, cohort instructor, school administrators, and your student.
