SCHOOL POLICIES

PARENT/GUARDIAN’S RESPONSIBILITIES (8/8/2020)

In Preparatory Academy, Inc. virtual schools, students learn at home with appropriate adult supervision while an instructor guides learning, tracks progress, and assesses development. As a parent/guardian of a virtual school student, it is important to understand the responsibilities associated with that role. In order to offer interactive courses with time on and off the computer, we require a parent/guardian to provide at home supervision.

Parents/Guardians play a vital role in their student’s education. They provide support and encouragement as students are working on their online courses. We expect parents/guardians to provide supervision during class hours and to monitor the student’s progress throughout the duration of the course.

Parents/Guardians are responsible for the physical location where students are learning. Some of the responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Be available or appoint a responsible person to be available to supervise the student during class times. Provide the pod instructor with a current phone number for emergency contact.
  • Provide a safe environment for the student: make sure the area where the student is working is free of dangerous items or hazardous materials.
  • Ensure there is access to the necessary technology, including daily internet access and availability.
  • Support Academic Integrity. Academic Integrity is one of our core values and one of the most important areas of focus as a learning organization.
  • Enforce our Online Dress Code Policy.
  • Set up parental locks, discuss cyber safety and monitor the students’ internet usage outside of the classroom
  • Parent/Guardian will be held legally responsible for ensuring that their students are attending school regularly, refer to our attendance policy and email your student’s main learning pod instructor with known absences. Your student's pod instructor is considered his or her primary instructor.
Instructors will keep the parent/guardian apprised of the student’s progress and will initiate contact if they fall behind in their coursework. Parents/Guardians/Appointee may contact an instructor directly via email and/or phone to answer questions about a course or activity. If a parent/guardian has a concern about the student’s performance or behavior, the parent/guardian should set up a conference with the student’s pod instructor.

As we are using a virtual learning environment, any member of a household will have potential contact with other children. Therefore, to provide the safest possible environment, all adult members of a household and any appointee will be fingerprinted and subject to a background check.
